AI eye screening for children, teens and adults
Spot eye problems early, before they get harder to treat.
A ten minute screening on a tablet or phone. PupilAI watches how the eyes move and align, and flags anything worth an eye doctor's look.
Screening
Amara O., age 6
Left reflection
Centred
Right reflection
Centred
Alignment
Normal
Children rarely say their vision is off.
They don't know the board is meant to look sharper. So the signs wait, sometimes until treatment is harder. In one Benin City school screening, only 5 of 41 children who needed glasses had them.
PupilAI gives every child a quick, clear check, and every parent a plain answer.
Results arrive as each screening finishes. Names are examples.
Are both eyes pointing the same way?
A flash photo shows where light reflects on each pupil. When one reflection sits off-centre, one eye may be turning in, out, up or down. This is the most common risk for lazy eye.
Checks for: squint (strabismus)
Alignment
Tunde A., age 8
Reading
Right eye reflection sits slightly toward the nose.
Four steps from consent to a clear answer.
01
Get consent
Each adult agrees, and a parent agrees for anyone under 18.
02
Run the screening
Ten minutes of tasks on a tablet or phone. For children it plays like a game.
03
See a clear result
Looks fine, or signs worth checking, with the reason in plain words.
04
Refer and follow up
A referral letter goes home, and PupilAI reminds families until the eye doctor visit happens.
Eye care here doesn't start at the clinic.
Most children never sit in an eye doctor's chair unless something is clearly wrong. By then the easy window can be gone. Screening has to come to where children already are.
1 to 4%
Lazy eye is common
It affects 1 to 4% of preschool children and is the leading cause of vision loss in one eye in children.
Under 8
Timing matters
Lazy eye responds best to treatment before about age 8. A missed year is hard to win back.
5 of 41
Help rarely arrives
In one Benin City school screening, only 5 of 41 children who needed glasses had them.

Screening, not diagnosis
PupilAI flags signs worth checking. Eye doctors diagnose and treat.
Video stays on the device
Camera images are processed on the tablet or phone. Only results are saved.
Consent first
Nothing runs without an adult's agreement, or a parent's for anyone under 18.
Tested against eye exams
We compare results with full eye exams, alongside clinical partners, before launch.
Progress, in the open.
PupilAI is in development. Here is where it stands, updated as we go.
Next
Validation pilot
Every screened child also gets a full eye exam, so we can measure how well PupilAI catches real problems.
Next
Clinical partner and first pilot schools
Working with eye care professionals in Lagos and Port Harcourt to guide the clinical side.
In progress
iPad camera prototype
Recording the first test sessions to prove the camera can measure eye alignment and movement reliably.
Done
Brand, site and screening design
The PupilAI identity, this site, and the design of the six screening checks.
